Description

Garage Door Bottom Seal Kit

This Garage door bottom seal kit is perfect for wood garage doors but is also so versatile that it is a perfect choice for not just other types / styles of garage doors but many other applications as well. This garage door bottom seal kit can be used on gates, sliding doors, bi-parting doors, larger windows both sliding and double hung and many other applications where a substantial seal is required. The retainer that is included in this kit is available as a stand alone product and we have several other widths and aluminum flat retainers.

Replacing the bottom weather seal on your wood garage door with this garage door bottom seal kit is a very nice upgrade to the standard wood door weather seal that is nailed onto the bottom of the garage door. Using this garage door bottom seal kit will give you a much better overall seal to the floor. Additionally, if there are gaps under the door, typically on the ends of a wood door, this garage door weather seal kit can help you seal those trouble areas without the need to scribe the garage door or address the concrete floor. If you have a carriage house style wood door this type of set up is a must. We like to use this garage door bottom seal kit every time we replace weather seal on any wood garage door.

KIT INCLUDES:
54″ x 1-3/8″ Flat PVC Retainer

Easy to install.

When installing the Garage Door Bottom Seal Kit it helps to have two people especially to slide the weather seal into the new bottom retainer.

Remove the existing weather seal and pull out all nails. Scrape the bottom of the door clean.

Hold the first length of retainer up and onto the bottom section with the end of the retainer even with the end of the garage door, and mark the retainer if any trimming or notching is needed. Using a hand saw or a hack saw, trim the retainer as needed.  We recommend putting a good quality silicone on the top edge of the retainer that is fitted to the bottom of the garage door, this will prevent water from getting between the retainer and the bottom of the door. We put a nice bead on the retainer so that it completely seals the retainer to the bottom of the garage door. Now install the retainer using the provided screws. Continue this process with the remaining lengths of retainer trimming and/or notching the final length of retainer at the other end  of the garage door. This flat retainer will follow the contour of the bottom of the door even if the door is pulled up on the ends.

Once the new retainer is installed securely to the bottom of the garage door insert the T portion of the weather seal into the slot on the bottom of the retainer, here is where it is best to have two people involved, one to guide the weather seal into the retainer and the other to pull the weather seal along the length of the garage door. We use WD40 applied into the channel of the retainer to help the weather seal slide. When you have pulled the weather seal the length of the garage door, make sure that the weather seal is not stretched or stressed. Once the weather seal is installed, trim off any excess weather seal with a sharp utility knife leaving approximately 1/2″ of weather seal beyond the edge of the garage door. You can run a screw into the retainer channel to hold the weather seal in place.

If after completing the installation of the garage door bottom seal kit you find that you have a gap under the door (typically at the edge of the door) you can insert foam rubber or the length of a garden hose built up with duct tape, into the end of the U portion of the weather seal, this will help keep the weather seal in it’s U shape.
